Lantern of the Underworld

The day I passed the imperial examinations, the whole village came to congratulate me. Then I discovered that my superior was using souls to brew merit sand. With the blood moon overhead, the windows and doors of every official's home reflected the torture chambers of the underworld. And I was the newly appointed jailer, the only one guarding the coffins. They used their official seals to try to crush me, so I buried them in locust-wood coffins. They used merit sand to prolong their lives, so I overturned the furnace where souls were refined. From a low-ranking clerk to the Yin-Yang Inspector, I carried a lantern made of human skin and a ledger of debts owed by a hundred thousand wronged souls, and fought my way back to the Golden Barbarian Hall. Every high-ranking official in the court was a prisoner on my list. This time, I would carve a bright and just world out of both the living realm and the underworld.
