Set in Shiping Village in Yuanling, western Hunan in the 1990s, "Obsession with Flowers" tells the story of a forbidden love filled with blood, tears and regret. Shen Nian, a woman from out of town, was sold to a gambler in the village due to an accident. However, in her depressive life, she became secretly involved with the taciturn mechanic Chen Yanzhi. Chen Yanzhi is an expert at the village's agricultural machinery station. His hands are covered with calluses, but he always comes to Shen Nian's rescue in the dark - blocking her gambler husband's punches and kicks, secretly giving her warm roasted sweet potatoes on cold nights, and using a repaired radio to buy her a moment of peace.
