The novel follows two storylines: the romantic ups and downs between Du Rijin and Ban Jingjing, and the fight against corruption in Saxi City.
Romance: Du Rijin and Ban Jingjing fall in love after meeting through hair. Their rival, Ting Lili, uses hair to set them up, causing them to break up. Ting Lili pursues Du Rijin without success, then falls in love with Lao Rong, only to suffer another setback. In the end, she marries Ban Jingjing's uncle. Through her matchmaking, Du and Ban reunite and get back together. Then Public Security Bureau Chief Lang Yidang sets his sights on Ban Jingjing, conspires with Principal Mang Bilin to seek her out and assault her, and uses a huge "bride price" to cover up the crime. Deeply traumatized, Ban Jingjing resigns and leaves, while Du Rijin goes to the Public Security University for graduate studies. Fate brings them together again in Binzhou City. Their shared love of literature rekindles their romance, and they finally marry.
The corruption investigation: In Saxi City, Lang Yidang, Mang Bilin, Lao Rong, and others form a corrupt network and act as protectors for criminal gangs. Du Rijin assumes a false identity and goes undercover at the Saxi City Public Security Bureau. After enduring many dangers and investigating deeply, he gathers conclusive evidence of corruption against Lang Yidang, Mang Bilin, and the others, ultimately uprooting the corrupt forces.
