The Unfortunate First Wife

The story opens with Lin Wanqing, the character played by Lin Wanqing: the eldest daughter of the Minister of Rites' household.

Lin Wanqing: All right, I understand my situation now.

But this official has no affection for the legitimate wife his family arranged for him. His heart belongs to Xiangling, the bride's dowry maid.

Xiangling isn't an ordinary maid either. She's actually the daughter of a distant relative of the lady of the house.

Pretty and alluring, she is determined to climb the social ladder.

So she did everything she could to become the bride's dowry maid.

In the original story, Miss Lin is the obstacle standing in the way of the official and his beloved concubine. Her sole purpose is to witness the deep affection between her husband and his concubine.

Like right now. Wow, they're really putting on a show.

If this were just an ordinary tale of household intrigue, Lin Wanqing wouldn't mind. She could eat and drink well at the Minister's residence and watch from the sidelines. Having no man bothering her would be more comfortable anyway.

After all, medical care in ancient times was poor, and having a philandering man around meant a high risk of catching a disease.

But that's not how it goes. As the contrast character to the sweet-romance heroine, after marrying the official, she can only struggle to survive, and her ending is tragic.
