During the Western Jin dynasty, various ethnic groups, including the Xiongnu, Xianbei, Jie, Qiang, and Di, migrated inland for a number of reasons. Meanwhile, the Western Jin's internal War of the Eight Princes weakened the ruling order, and natural disasters struck one after another.
In 304, Li Xiong of the Di founded Cheng Han, while Liu Yuan of the Xiongnu founded Former Zhao, ushering in the era of the Five Barbarians' kingdoms. The Disaster of Yongjia followed: Luoyang fell, Emperor Huai of Jin was captured, and the Western Jin dynasty collapsed in 316.
Afterward, the Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms fought among themselves. Former Zhao and Later Zhao faced off, Ran Min destroyed Later Zhao, and Former Qin briefly unified the north.
During this period, Central China was plunged into prolonged warfare. The people were displaced, the population dwindled, production was devastated, cities were destroyed, and social order collapsed. It was a dark and chaotic age. At the same time, however, the different ethnic groups shifted their geographic distribution, interacted and integrated with one another, and exchanged ideas and culture. This brought new impetus for future development and profoundly shaped Chinese history.
