The Assassin Neglects His Trade, Reclaiming the Empire Through Farming

Butler: "Master, two things."

Bai Dong: "Go ahead."

Butler: "Our potato harvest reached ten million jin this year. Several countries have placed orders with us, and business is even better than last year."

"Envoys from the Shangyue Kingdom are going around persuading the neighboring states that we've planted too many potatoes and have excess production, that we can't sell them all and they'll go moldy. They say our thriving business is cutting into other countries' profits, and are urging them to come and take our goods."

Bai Dong: "Hah. If we can't sell them, how is our business cutting into other countries' profits? What kind of trash can become an ambassador these days?"

"What's the other thing?"

Butler: "A palace spy reports that His Majesty intends to make you his son-in-law."

Bai Dong: "Huh? Make me his son-in-law? Then I'd have to marry into the royal family and live in the capital. Why don't I just make the palace my home while I'm at it?"

Looking at the piles of orders and stacks of secret letters, Bai Dong felt a little vexed.

All he'd wanted at first was to make sure his own family had enough to eat. Then, out of a little conscience, he'd made sure the whole village had enough to eat too. Who could have guessed that he'd end up a wealthy international merchant, richer than the state?

Who knew that he used to be an assassin, not a farmer?
