The protagonist in the story; her name is Mu Xiaolian, a "prostitute". During the day, she sleeps in a rented dark room. At night, she dresses up and goes out to work to greet her guests.
She hoped to live an ordinary and happy life with a husband who loved her, but the society was too cruel, so she was led into the prostitute industry by her best friend. Later, she met a handsome engineer, which ignited her hopes, but the ending still did not go as she wished. It was a sad story.
