From published lore, since the apocalyptic event that killed over a billion people, a new magical world has taken its place. People called Awakeners appear, and others can be Awakened by learning skill books that can drop from monsters they kill. By killing more monsters and absorbing dropped Life Cores, these awakened creatures can increase their power, thereby increasing three attributes: Vitality, Focus, and Strength.
