The Winds of Change in the Zhenguan Era

In 626 AD, on the fourth day of the sixth lunar month in the ninth year of the Wude era of the Tang dynasty, Prince Li Shimin launched the Xuanwu Gate Incident, killing his elder brother, Crown Prince Li Jiancheng, Prince of Qi Li Yuanji, and their sons, who were then struck from the imperial clan register. Afterward, Li Yuan handed over military and political authority to Prince Li Shimin. Three days later, on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month, the Guihai day, July 5, Li Shiming was made Crown Prince. The imperial edict declared: "From this day forth, all military and state affairs, great or small, shall be entrusted to the Crown Prince for decision before being reported to Us." On the ninth day of the eighth lunar month, the Jiazi day, September 4, Li Yuan abdicated and took the title of Retired Emperor, yielding the throne to Li Shimin. Li Shimin ascended the throne as Emperor Taizong of Tang and changed the era name to Zhenguan.
