Following the Wind to Find You

How could life be without regrets? A book hidden in the farthest corner of the library, its slightly yellowed printed words beneath your fingertips: every one of those words is a regret. Walking along a path beside a quiet lake as the setting sun casts its faint light, telling of life's warmth and cold; someone in your WeChat contacts whom you haven't spoken to in a long time is a regret, too. Streetlamps illuminate a city just after a snowfall, making it seem even more desolate. An old man selling roasted sweet potatoes has few customers on the roadside. After talking with him, you learn he was once a sunny young man with dreams and goals. You lament that his life has flowed away like water, never to return, yet you also mock yourself for being short on money and unable to buy more from him. That, too, is a regret.

Perhaps life's regrets shouldn't be limited to love, hatred, and heartbreak, yet emotion runs through every regret from beginning to end. When I see you again, the evening breeze lifts your hair. You look up and smile softly, just as you did when I first met you, and my heart stirs all over again.
