Heavenly Tribulation

The Great Expansion has fifty numbers, of which forty-nine are put to use. The one left over is the variable. The fixed numbers are the constant laws, governed by the cycles of Heaven's Way, eternal and unchanging. Only the variable is formless and shapeless, unseen and untraceable, ever-changing and impossible to grasp. Yet the variable is the origin of all things: One gives birth to two, two to three, and three to all things. The variable gives birth to the fixed numbers, the fixed numbers give birth to calamities, and calamities give birth to the variable.
