Great Ming: Tax Revenues for Ninety Years? Old Zhu Is Stunned

"What? Pei County has already collected taxes through the next ninety years?"

After transmigrating to the early Hongwu era of the Ming dynasty, Qin Mu became the magistrate of a county, giving its people stable, prosperous lives and making the region wealthy.

When Zhu Yuanzhang arrived incognito on an inspection tour, he was utterly shocked. Then, under the alias Old Huang, he became a clerk in the county office, only to grow more and more alarmed the longer he looked.

"Purchase tax, value-added tax, personal income tax... What are these? And you haven't even paid them to the imperial court."

Qin Mu: "The imperial laws don't include these taxes. Why would I pay them?"

"You collude with merchants and act as a local protector, and you even accept enormous bribes?"

Qin Mu: "Old Huang, I call that improving the business environment. As for those enormous bribes? They know I like calligraphy and paintings."

You split the people's money with the court, but pocket all the gentry's money yourself?

Qin Mu tossed over the ledger. Old Huang opened it, only to find that all the accounts added up?

Zhu Yuanzhang stamped his feet in fury. "Falsifying the books? And making them flawless? I'll have you executed!"

Empress Ma pinched Old Zhu's ear and said, "Chongba, you can't kill him! The more Qin Mu pockets, the wealthier our Ming dynasty becomes!"
