Thirty-Six Stratagems of War

Soldiers are a matter of deception.

When able, appear unable. When deploying troops, appear not to. When near, appear far away; when far away, appear near.

Lure them with gains. Take them when they are in disarray. Be prepared when they are strong. Avoid them when they are powerful. Provoke them when they are angry. Make them arrogant when they are humble. Wear them down when they are rested. Divide them when they are united. Attack where they are unprepared, and strike when they least expect it.

These are the principles behind victory in warfare, and they cannot be laid down in advance.
