In 907, the first year of Kaiping, Zhu Wen deposed Emperor Ai of the Tang Dynasty, Li Jie, and proclaimed himself emperor. He established the capital in Kaifeng, and the country was named Daliang, which was changed to Kaiping for Liang Taizu. Since then, the Tang Dynasty ended its 289-year rule, and Chinese history entered the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. In June 907, King Qi, under pressure from the Liang Empire in the east and the Shu Kingdom in the south, recruited men over the age of 16 to enter the military camps across the country.
