The Tale of the Mirror Flower

A poor scholar in the Ming Dynasty sets out to change his circumstances. He travels to Jinghu Lake in Luoyang to find a five-colored magic mirror, hoping to travel through time and become wealthy. His treasure hunt is full of twists and turns. During the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, a miraculous five-colored mirror was said to exist south of Luoyang. Legend had it that the exquisite treasure could reveal one's past life and allow its bearer to travel to any time. No one in Luoyang had ever seen what it looked like. Hidden in the depths of a lake south of the city, it was guarded by the Lake God's spirit. Many people sought to claim the exquisite mirror, but whenever they reached the middle of the lake, a mysterious force would pull them or their boats beneath the water, never to be seen again. One group of treasure hunters after another disappeared.

At the start of the third year of the Jiajing reign, a Chang'an scholar surnamed Bai, whose courtesy name was Yan Hao, had failed the imperial examinations time and again. His family was desperately poor. Determined to change his circumstances, he decided to search for the mirror, travel through time, and make himself rich. First, he gathered plenty of provisions, along with a sword, books, and clothes. In the fourth year of the Jiajing reign, he set out from Chang'an, where many strange adventures awaited him.
