You Are the Protagonist of My Life

I didn't say a word. I lowered my head, let my tears fall, and stared at one spot on the floor.

"If I were a girl, I would've already smoothed out some of her rough edges so she wouldn't bully any other girls." She looked at me again with those dark, gleaming eyes.

I lifted my head a little and glanced at her, then said softly, "You are a girl."

I looked away and lowered my head again.

Her gaze stayed fixed on me as she set down her chopsticks.

I immediately regretted blurting out an answer. I thought, I'm done for. I've made her angry. She's furious.

I clenched my fists. The image of Xin Ran getting angry flashed through my mind, and I squeezed harder until my palms began to ache. I wished I could punch myself.

Suddenly, a large hand touched the top of my head. "That's right." Xin Ran curled her lips strangely and narrowed her eyes as she gently patted my head. Then she smiled and said, "I am a girl, silly."

She drew out the words "a girl" as she said them.
