The Way of Heaven's Balance

People only live for a few decades, and always want to make a splash. Looking back on the fleeting past, I have always loved books and the sorrows they bring. So many strange thoughts and insights fill my heart that it would be a shame not to let them out before they vanish into thin air. After coming into the world, I have done all sorts of things and met all kinds of people, yet I still can't accept that I should end up on any particular path. It's truly foolish, maybe even crazy. But even a stubborn fool can have a few interesting ideas. I've gathered them and woven them into dream-talk for idle readers, partly in the hope of finding kindred spirits, but mostly to put food on the table and stay alive.

The idea for this story came from an amusing experience. When I was young, I worked at a livestock farm. One day, as I was driving a nearly thousand-pound dairy cow that had stopped producing milk to be slaughtered, I met its gaze. Its wide eyes and bellow seemed to squeeze my heart. Ever since, I've often wondered about the difference between people and beasts, whether intelligence or strength is superior, and why morality and nature should be fixed as they are. That was the seed of this story. Young people are also often fascinated by the usual ideas of the supernatural, superhuman powers, evolution, cultivation, magic, and all sorts of other things. After twisting and rounding out those ideas, this story came to be.
