About This Novel
"The Moon and Sixpence" is a novel based on the deeds of the French post-impressionist painter Gauguin. The protagonist in the book, Strickland, was originally the manager of a securities company. He had a prosperous career, a gentle and virtuous wife, and well-behaved and lovely children. However, when he reached middle age, he suddenly responded to the call of his heart, abandoned his family and children, and went to Paris to engage in painting creation. Although poverty, hunger, and disease surrounded him, he took it calmly. Maugham deeply explores the contradictions and interactions between life and art in his novels.
