About This Novel

The story begins with Willard Russell, a World War II veteran who returns home. After marriage, Russell and his wife were very loving, and they gave birth to a son named Alvin. But the good times didn't last long. A few years later Charlotte was diagnosed with stomach cancer. After the doctors were helpless, Russell began to force his son to pray frantically with him day and night. After the prayer failed, Russell thought of "sacrifice." He first collected animals that were killed on the roadside, then slaughtered live lambs, then pointed the butcher knife at his son's pet dog, and finally committed murder... When all this madness was in vain, Russell offered the last sacrifice beside his wife's grave: himself. After his father died, little Alvin was raised by his grandmother. Although he experienced a terrible childhood, Alvin inherited his father's strong determination and lacked his father's paranoid fanaticism. Somehow, his fate is intertwined with a series of crazy, weird, hypocritical, or cold-blooded sinners; and in the end, all sins will be judged through the hands of this young man in some unexplainable way...
