About This Novel

The story of "Autumn River" takes place during the Shaoxing period of Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty. It tells the story of Chen Miaochang, a nun in a privy nunnery in the suburbs of Qingshi Town, Linjiang. She was originally the daughter of an official in Linjiang. She was beautiful and affectionate. However, because she was frail and sick since childhood, her parents abandoned her to Buddhism, became a nun, and chanted sutras and worshiped Buddha in the privy nunnery. With too much time to spare, she fell in love with Pan Bizheng, a scholar who passed by the nunnery. After the scholar left, Chen Miaochang eagerly chased her lover, but in front of her were the rushing river and the old boatman.
