About This Novel

"Zuleika Dobson, or, an Oxford love story" is a fantasy work created by the British writer Max Beerbom, inspired by Oxford University in the Edwardian era. The heroine of the story, Julieca Dobson, is a charming female magician who was invited to Oxford University to visit her grandfather, who was the dean of the college. Her arrival caused a sensation all over Oxford: all the college students fell in love with her at first sight, even the proud and indifferent Duke of Dorset was no exception, but Julika could not fall in love with the man who admired her. In order to fulfill his love, the Duke made a promise to Julieka that he would die for her; other college students also followed suit. However, just before committing suicide, the Duke's desire to die was shaken, and whether to die or not to die became a difficult question... With beautiful language, tortuous plots, and erudition and wisdom permeating between the lines, this novel was a great success when it was first published in 1911. E. M. Forster praised it as "both witty and charming, both iridescent and profound"; Bertrand Russell said that Oxford University in the novel has "a charm that cannot be reproduced in a thousand years"; Virginia Woolf even praised Beerbohm for "bringing personality to literature". "An Affair at Oxford" is not only favored by readers and writers, but has also been selected into the well-known American Random House's "100 Best Novels of the 20th Century" list. It is a classic that cannot be missed.
