Chu Hong is a Shanghai girl who has worked in Singapore for five years. She has endless conversations with the young man who sits across the table from her at school, Saimu, who often travels alone on backpacking trips. However, for three years, the two have been close to each other but have never expressed their love. In the end, they cannot change the ending of going their separate ways. The author describes the "spiritual love" between Chu Hong and Sai Mu with admiration and heartache. They appreciate each other but are unwilling to give further. They never have physical love but miss each other. It is not because of external resistance, but because they long for love but are afraid of its fleetingness.
