About This Novel

"I heard about the real dragon species, but it is still an old man. It whines and thinks of fighting, and stands tall towards the sky." This is a poem left by the poet Du Fu after he lived in Qinzhou during the "Anshi Rebellion". The poet was inspired by the good horse and used the metaphor of "true dragon" and "old horse" to express his desire to make contributions to the country even when he was homeless and in a very difficult situation. After the "September 18th Incident", Xu Beihong used the poetic conception or direct theme of "Wailing and thinking of fighting, standing towards the sky" to draw countless war horses with their necks wailing and neighing in anger, expressing his infinite concern and feelings of serving the country, and encouraging the Chinese people's anti-Japanese fighting spirit in his own unique way. In fact, "whining", "standing" and "thinking about fighting" are not only important themes in Xu Beihong's horse paintings, but also demonstrate Xu Beihong's artistic stance and state throughout his life.
