About This Novel
Sakaguchi Ango is a representative figure of Japanese rogue literature, and "On the Fall" is his representative work. This book collects 17 of his representative essays and critical articles, including his self-perception of Japanese culture, in-depth analysis of post-war Japanese society, and serious discussion of literature. Sakaguchi's articles are precise and sharp, and his powers of observation are like a scalpel, always able to pierce through the superficial veneer of things and get to their core and essence. These articles had a huge repercussions in Japanese society, which was in dire straits after the war, and had great appeal to young people.
