About This Novel
After World War II, the young writer Stingo met the Polish woman Sophie and her lover Nathan in their apartment in Brooklyn. The three admired each other and quickly became friends. The beautiful and sad Sophie attracts Stingo deeply. Sophie is a survivor of the Nazi concentration camp. After the war, she came to the United States and fell in love with the talented Jewish artist Nathan. However, the relationship between the couple seems to be passionate, crazy and tense. What makes Stingo particularly puzzled is that in the face of the suspicious and manic Nathan, Sophie always suffers silently and is unwilling to leave. Stingo became curious about this woman who seemed to be burdened with a mysterious spiritual burden, and gradually learned about Sophie's nightmarish past. Sophie had two children. In the Nazi concentration camp, she could only let one child survive. She chose her son and pushed her daughter to the crematorium. Later, in the process of inquiring about her son's whereabouts, she used her father's identity as an anti-Semite to accept him against his will. Serving as a pure officer... These painful memories have always tortured Sophie and made her unable to escape. Even if she gained Stingo's love, even if she had the chance to start a new life, Sophie still chose to return to her already crazy lover Nathan and go to death with him...
