About This Novel

"Laotongcheng" was founded in 1931. It is famous for its snacks of three kinds of fresh bean curds, and is known as the "King of Bean Curds". He was praised by Chairman Mao Zedong many times. The first part of the trilogy "The Zeng Family in Old Tongcheng, Hankou" tells the story of the Zeng family's experience as a restaurant and snack bar in Hankou from the 1930s to the 1950s. The Zeng family grew from a farmer from the countryside of Hanyang to a nationally famous "Bean King". On the one hand, the novel shows the customs of Hankou at that time, and on the other hand, it also shows the life of the working people living at the bottom of society.
