"The Dancing Girl of Izu" is an autobiographical novel written by Kawabata Yasunari based on his trip to Izu when he was nineteen years old (1918). The author lost his parents when he was young, and when he was sixteen, all his relatives left him. His tragic life experience gave him a withdrawn and melancholy character. In order to relieve this depressed mood, the author started a journey to Izu alone when he was nineteen years old. On the way, he met a group of artists who made a living from touring performances.
