About This Novel
The seven stories included in "The Lost Bloody Gift in the Sea Breeze" all take place in the harsh landscapes of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. There is a young man who longs to get rid of his family's fate of mining coal on the island for generations and leaves home when he reaches adulthood. Some people talk about a middle-aged university teacher recalling his great ambitions as a boy but being trapped on the island to fish. On the occasion of my grandmother's 96th birthday, my father made a living, and members of my extended family scattered all over the country gathered together at the corner of my grandmother's widowed home. Dust-laden past events also emerged in my heart... These stories outline the close ties and insurmountable gaps within the family, as well as the common fragility and tenderness of people when facing their fate. The seven stories in the book not only reflect the rough and affectionate blend of people and the natural world, but also implicitly and restrainedly outline the complex, mysterious and simple human hearts of Cape Breton.
