About This Novel

An autobiographical novel by British writer Smedley. An important masterpiece of realism during the Enlightenment period in England in the 18th century. Starting from the rational principles of Enlightenment philosophy, the author comprehensively displays the social reality of British feudal and capitalist society on the eve of the "Industrial Revolution" through the bumpy experiences of a poor young Scottish doctor. "The Biography of Landon" is Smellet's debut novel. It is a typical picaresque novel and has a strong autobiographical nature. It tells the story of Scotsman Langdon's search for love and fortune. Unwilling to endure the domestic violence of his grandfather, Langdon left home at a young age and went to London to make a living. Through hard work, he obtained a medical license and became an assistant naval doctor. Later, he encountered misfortune and became a slave. After returning to London, he was imprisoned due to high debts. Later, his uncle rescued him, and the two wandered around, meeting his father in Spain. His father also left home at an early age and has now become a wealthy man. From then on, Langdon lived a life of a gentleman with no worries about food and clothing.
