About This Novel
The story revolves around the protagonist Mao Zai (Wang Chongwen) and his family, relatives and friends, and the time span is from the beginning of the new century to middle age. Mao Zai is a deputy editor-in-chief of a magazine, and his wife Ma Wenjuan runs a dance hall. The two gradually become estranged due to their differences in values. A series of events such as the death of the elderly at home, rebellious children, and career setbacks occurred one after another, exposing the fission of traditional family structures in the process of urbanization and the struggles of individuals in the tide of the times. Mao Zai swayed between ideals and reality, witnessed the rise and fall of township enterprises, the hollowing out of rural areas and other social phenomena, and finally fell into confusion when his family was broken and he lost himself.
