About This Novel
In the depths of Baiyangdian, is it the infinite scenery in the memory of a Toronto painter, or is it an elegy for the fate of a group of boys and girls from a water town? Is it a haven for life or a habitat for the soul? Facing the boundless water waves, the author gives us an inner feeling as lush as reeds... In my studio in Toronto, friends and gallery owners come in and out, and the paintings on the wall are also changed. There is only one small painting, always staying in a corner. Its background is a field of reeds in the Netherlands, with a Chinese village girl sitting in front of the reeds. "Netherlands" comes from "Netherlands", and the Chinese should really be translated as "quagmire". The God of the swamp must be a woman, like the woman in Vermeer's painting, dragging a fat and heavy cotton skirt, shrouding her territory and people in mist.
