About This Novel
Chekhov is a world-class master of short stories in Russia and the last critical realist art master in Russia in the late 19th century. Together with French writer Maupassant and American writer O. Henry, he is known as one of the "three major short story writers in the world". This collection contains 9 short stories, most of which describe villages and farmers, reflecting the face of Russian rural areas in the 19th century. The author depicts the gloomy lives of small people in the countryside on a beautiful pastoral background with sympathetic brushstrokes.

Perhaps we have to look at it in light of the historical background. Both the male protagonist and the female protagonist are very difficult to comment on. One doesn't care about her family, and the other is obsessed with love.
