About This Novel

The village of Fistenfeld, located in northeastern Germany, has a long history and has witnessed the vicissitudes of the Thirty Years' War, the Kingdom of Prussia, World War II, and the division and reunification of East and West Germany. Today, the older generation in the village is dying. When autumn arrives, villagers light bonfires, burn witch dummies and sing and dance to celebrate the traditional festival "Anna Day". In the 24 hours before the festival, the story continues: the ferryman who drove the ferry has just died; the 90-year-old female painter once again went out to try to depict the night in the village; a girl named Anna ran around the village at night, accidentally met two mysterious men, and bumped into the experimenter. A former East German lieutenant who attempted suicide; the former East German secret police now devotes all his enthusiasm to raising bantam chickens, and a female fox intends to come out of the hole to steal eggs for her cubs... Beautiful and bizarre legends and historical memories are interspersed, calling us into the epic of the village.
