About This Novel
On April 7, the third year of Hoei's reign (1706), it rained continuously in Yakumura, Yakushima, Satsuma Domain, Japan. Light gray clouds cover the Yakushima Mountains. For a month and a half, the highest peak of Yakushima, Miyanogadake, has not been visible. The thirty-three thatched houses in Shimoyaku Village are all covered with pale green moss. Dozens of people gathered in front of a big house in the center of the village, crowding in the rain and making low murmurs. The crimson mud submerged their skinny ankles, which is the color of the red mud used to paint the walls. This village deep in the Yakushima mountains is melting under the continuous heavy rain. Through the holes in the wall, two men could be seen sitting in the middle of the room. Drops of water fell into the fire pit, creating a choking smoke.
