Image Poetics in the Age of Image Culture

With the clarification of the characteristics of the image culture era and the advent of the consumer society, images, as a media form, art form and cultural consumption object, increasingly occupy a central position in social and cultural discourse, and research with images as objects has emerged. One of the phenomena is worth noting: among the few critical articles on photographic creation in China, researchers drew inspiration from the field of poetic criticism and created a new term - "image poetics" to discuss some specific issues in photographic creation. However, the concept of "image poetics" used here is ambiguous. In the specific application process, it does not cover the academic content that should be included in poetics research, and no corresponding academic logic and research paradigm have been formed. As an academic discourse, "image poetics" still remains an empty concept. In addition, this concept should include various images such as movies, TV, and digital images in terms of naming. However, existing research has not extended to related image forms such as movies, TV, and digital images. There has always been an academic connection and inheritance between poetics and image research. Based on the profound influence of Aristotle's poetic theory, for more than a hundred years, the study of film narrative and meaning has often been placed in the framework of poetics. The poetry of film has been fully paid attention to by film theorists, and the poetic nature of film has been included in the field of poetic research. The concept of "film poetics" naturally emerged. In the past two decades, domestic researchers have successively published a number of monographs that explore film creation and theoretical statements from a poetics perspective. "Film Poetics," "Art Poetics," and "Cultural Poetics" have all been introduced into film research, enriching the connotation of film poetics from different dimensions. Poetics can not only be closely integrated with film art, but as a research method and a path of understanding, the perspective of poetics can also look at the study of photography, television, multimedia and other image forms. Therefore, the poetic research on various image forms initiated by "film poetics" should be continuously expanded and further enriched into "image poetics" on the basis of covering all existing image forms. Traditional poetic theory needs constant innovation, and current image research also expects poetics to bring a broader vision and a more complete system. "Poetic expression of images" and "poetic image research" have won widespread attention and formed academic consciousness. In other words, while images are moving towards poetics, poetry is also moving towards images.
