About This Novel

There are four concubines of the Zhao family in two generations. Zheng Shuzhao, wife of Zhao Tinghuang, wrote "Poems Behind Shuxuan", Zhao Tinghuang's concubine Tang Zhen wrote "Yunying Yinjuan", Zhao Tinghuang's eldest son Zhao Yi's concubine Luo Mianxian wrote "Fragrant House Poems", and Zhao Tinghuang's second son Zhao Yi's wife Hua Xuan wrote "Manuscript of Wenzilou Poems". Their creations ran through the second half of the 19th century. The Zhao family had four concubines from two generations, two of whom (Tang Zhen and Luo Mianxian) committed suicide. The four concubines of the Zhao family from two generations, with their life interests and thoughts and emotions recorded in their poems, as well as their tragic acts of committing suicide as husbands, show us the living conditions and emotional flow of intellectual women in the late Qing Dynasty.
