Vision, Power and the Body: a Study of Gaze Mechanisms in the Works of Eudora Welty
by He Xiaoxiang
About This Novel
This book selects three of Welty's most visual works of the 1940s, "Green Curtain", "Delta Wedding" and "Golden Apple", for research, and interprets the role of visual mechanisms in Welty's works in constructing the works from three aspects: visual pleasure, visual turn and visual power. Visual pleasure takes the collective gaze in "Green Curtain" as its research object, visual turn focuses on the female gaze in "Delta Wedding", and visual power interprets social surveillance in "Golden Apples". From these three aspects, this book explores how vision carries power and desire on the bodies of different characters in Welty's works, and how these characters use the body as a field of struggle to compose their own life movements.
