The Essence of the Novel
About This Novel
"The Essence of Novel" was written in 1885. It is Tsubouchi Xiaoyao's literary criticism and an important theoretical work in the history of modern Japanese literature. After the Meiji period, two trends became popular in the Japanese literary world. One was dramatic literature that inherited the humorous tradition of Edo, and the other was political novels with the purpose of spreading Western ideas. "The Essence of Novel" advocates that literature should exclude morality and utilitarianism and be based on objective description. The "realism" proposed by Tsubouchi Xiaoyao had a profound impact on the birth of modern Japanese literature. The book is divided into two parts. The first volume advocates that the most important thing in novels is to describe human feelings, and further explains that they should describe the appearance and customs of the world. The second volume discusses specific writing methods.
