A Study of the Novels of the Goncourt Brothers: 1851-1870
by Xin Ran
About This Novel
Edmond de Goncourt (1822-1896) and Jules de Goncourt (1830-1870) were a pair of brother writers who wrote together and were active in the French literary world in the mid-to-late 19th century. This book is based on the French Second Empire (1851-1870), and combines the historical context to analyze the Goncourt brothers' "pure analysis" poetic concept, the novel's "documentation" tendency and their unique aesthetic expression of "artist's brushwork". At the same time, combined with the Goncourt brothers' understanding of modernity and modern society, the symbiotic relationship between them being alienated and dependent on the times is explored, as well as the innovations and breakthroughs they made for the modernization of French novels.
