The 4th Corps of the Second Field Army is responsible for crossing the Jiangxi section of the Anhui-Jiangxi border. On April 21, commander and political commissar Chen Geng led the 4th Corps to forcefully cross the Yangtze River from Bajiao Prefecture, Pengze County, breaking through the enemy's defense line from Jiujiang to Anqing. At 17:00 on the 22nd, they occupied the Madang Fortress in Pengze County, Jiangxi Province. Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping, based on the chaotic trend of the Kuomintang army after the breakthrough of Jiang defense, decided to cancel the 4th Corps' mission to take over Nanjing and instead advance along the right side of the 5th Corps to the east and west areas of Shangrao to annihilate the enemies on the Zhejiang-Jiangxi line, cut off the connection between Jiangxi and Guangxi, and attack Nanchang.
