Our Past and Present Lives
by Yu Li
About This Novel
At dusk, the wind picked up. Mong Kok is still very lively, with red and green neon signs flashing, and crowds of people like ants crowding under the lights. It truly deserves the word "prosperity". From time to time, the wind carried English, Cantonese, Filipino or other languages that I could not understand, indicating the extraordinary identity of this international metropolis. Of course, there are also mainlanders like us who speak Mandarin, and there are many of them. Xinci said that as more and more people from mainland China come to Hong Kong for tourism and consumption, business employees have to learn to speak Mandarin. However, being able to speak only Mandarin is equivalent to being half-dumb in Hong Kong. Buying things and asking for directions is very laborious, and you often have to resort to gestures or English. Fortunately, Xinci was by my side as a translator, which saved me a lot of trouble.
