The Story of Lena Fox: an Illustrated Book
by (france) Compiled By Paulin Parry
About This Novel
"The Story of the Fox" is a long French animal story poem with a fox as the protagonist. It is the most important and representative work in medieval citizen literature, and is also the most accomplished and influential work of similar story poems in France. It assumes the animal world, endows animals with human actions, language, thoughts and feelings, uses animals as metaphors for humans, and alludes to human society. It vividly expresses the complex contradictions and struggles of medieval French society, and exposes the ugliness and corruption of the feudal ruling class. It has had a great impact on French and even European literature. Its satirical and comedic features are not only the direct source of the works of the famous French fable poet La Fontaine in the 17th century, but also opened the way for realistic novels in the 18th century and critical realist novels in the 19th century.
