Wakes and Funerals Are Senior Citizens' Parties
About This Novel
In the past thirty years, five ladies have grown old together and entered their octogenarian years hand in hand. They gather together every month to share "ladies' luncheons" where they plan for each other's life difficulties, tell interesting stories about each other's encounters, and develop insights into friendship, aging and death. Sometimes they battle wits with caregivers just to get a bite of bread that is high in oil and sugar; sometimes they try to drive to rescue their companions who are sent to a nursing home in a whimsical way, although in the end they are unable to renew their driver's licenses due to vision problems; sometimes they forget the theme of the party and only find out in the end that it is a funeral. In addition, there is also the overwhelming burden that the dust of history recorded by the author weighs on ordinary people. She experienced World War II at the age of ten and was forced to flee to a foreign country. She was unfortunately infected with COVID-19 in her later years. She wrote about what she witnessed with her own eyes, but it is also affectionate, warm and touching.
