Before and Now
About This Novel
He was sent to a mental hospital, and the hospital was shrouded in a mysterious atmosphere, as if history was telling him something. The department he was in was very special. The people who lived in it were all selected for certain talent experiments in childhood because of their certain talents. This place was originally a "genius research institute". After the institute closed, these geniuses were left behind. These geniuses know everything: about the truth about the events in the Russian Revolution, about who the revolutionary leaders were and how their life trajectories changed, about whether God was involved in the changes in the historical trajectory, about the intricate relationships between the great figures of the past era... He tried to record everything he heard, but in the process he gradually discovered that the moment that determines the fate of everyone is about to come. "Before and Now" was originally published in New World magazine. The novel caused an uproar as soon as it was published. The editor of the magazine publicly stated that he refused to accept the author's philosophy and poetics. For this reason, the author had to change his literary position. Many of his subsequent creative activities were related to the "Flag" magazine. In fact, if you put Sharov's creations together, readers can easily see the author's creative characteristics. Historical figures and historical events often occupy an important position in writers' works, but these characters and events are usually narrated by one or a few people, and the narrator's historical materials come from so-called "diaries", "notes", and "forgotten archives". Therefore, it is obvious that the author's creative purpose is not to reproduce history, nor to subvert history, but to explain historical events and historical processes from his own perspective, and to evaluate the personal character and historical role of historical figures. The same goes for "Before and Now."
