This book provides a panoramic review of the history of the world's oceans in the form of an encyclopedia. This book is committed to providing a cross-cultural study of ocean history from a broad background and comprehensive perspective, especially highlighting the important function of the ocean in connecting different people and races, as well as the important role of the ocean in the formation of world history. From ancient times to the present, the ocean has promoted human exchanges, trade and tourism; navigation has promoted the progress of science and technology; the ocean itself has attracted people's imagination and produced many literary and artistic works about it. This book is divided into two volumes, upper and lower, with eight chapters in total, arranged in chronological order. Each chapter begins with a general summary of important maritime developments and a chronology of major events in that period (or era); followed by key entries and explanations about explorers, inventors, major events, ports, ships, science and technology, etc., Basically focusing on exploration, trade, and tourism; at the end of each chapter, there are extended readings and literature. By emphasizing the observation records of explorers, businessmen, travelers, warriors, etc. In different eras, marine literature in different eras and cultural backgrounds is described and summarized.
