About This Novel
The work is set in Egdon Moor in southwestern England, and takes the opportunity of the return of young Clem to his hometown. It describes the love entanglement between Eustacia and Clem, Wade and Thomasin. Among them, Eustacia, portrayed by Hardy, is beautiful, intelligent, maverick, and adventurous, but her yearning for a flashy world and her lack of commitment to love and marriage make her a model of vain and frivolous women. She is one of the most successful heroines in contemporary British novels, and the description of Egdon Heath, where the story takes place, is a model of landscape description. "The Return" is an important sign that Hardy's novel art has begun to mature. It is a representative "character and environment novel" in Hardy's works.
