"The Cause of Laughter" is one of Zhang Henshui's most influential masterpieces. "The Cause of Laughter" tells the story of Fan Jiashu, a young man from a wealthy family in the south of the Yangtze River, who came to Beijing in Beijing during the reign of the Beiyang Warlords, and fell in love with Shen Fengxi, a Tianqiao drum calligraphy artist, at first sight, and they fell in love with each other. Warlord General Liu took a fancy to Shen Fengxi and forced her to become his concubine. Shen Fengxi succumbed to his coercion and inducement. The book is interspersed with the emotional entanglements between Fan Jiashu and the civilian chivalrous lady Guan Xiugu, and the daughter of the Beiyang government's chief financial officer, He Lina.
