Mrs. Skaggs' Husbands
About This Novel
Bret Hart, an influential writer with local flavor in the history of American literature, is known as "the master of describing the American western style" together with Mark Twain and Hamlin Garland. The creation of female characters is a highlight of Hart's short stories. The female images in his works are changeable and have different temperaments. Novels with women's life and emotional experiences as the theme account for half of his works. Female characters in novels can be roughly divided into two categories. One type has a flamboyant personality, a bumpy life, and is quite legendary in life; the other type is vulgar and worldly, often losing themselves in a world of materialistic desires. The heroine in "Mrs. Skaggs's Husbands" falls into the latter category. She has remarried many times and is a promiscuous woman. All the men who marry her have a very tragic ending. Generally speaking, the female images in Hart's works are full of personality and have outstanding characteristics.
