About This Novel

"Jacques the Fatalist and His Master" is the fourth volume of the "Collected Works of Diderot". The story begins with an aimless journey between Jacques and his master. Regarding the master and servant, we neither know their identities nor their whereabouts. During the journey, they talked about their own experiences and continued to reflect and debate on the popular social issues at that time, from novel art, religion, class to male-female relations, moral ethics and other issues. Milan Kundera praised it highly, calling it "the highest achievement of the novel art in the eighteenth century."
