The interview subjects of a celebrity psychiatrist are killed one after another. Not long after each case, she will receive antemortem photos of the victims sent by the "Sandman". Large areas of the deceased's skin and flesh were cut off, and medical glue and sand containing gunpowder residue were left at the scene. The unidentified little boy lies alone in Scarpetta's morgue. Scarpetta found a gold coin outside her home with the boy's fingerprints and glue from the "Sandman" murder scene on it. Deaths followed one after another, and the list of names in the morgue log continued to lengthen. Scarpetta was vaguely aware that her name had also been included...
